The Empty Room Upstairs Can Mimic Another

One of the biggest dilemmas for any household is what to do with that spare room upstairs? For someone that loves DIY and home decoration activities, it’s actually a godsend. They get to reset the room however they wish and pretty much stir their creative juices into a smooth-as-silk flow. For those that aren’t so versed in homely things, it can be more than a bit of a problem. In fact some people are so afraid that they might get it wrong, they just leave the room blank. So right up and til they want to sell the home, they have been living with a giant empty hole in their home. The issue is, what kind of ideas could work? Starting totally fresh is what gets people twisted up. When you have the money, you can throw ideas at the wall and create the room into whatever you want. But when you don’t, it’s best to fall back onto something safe, like mimicking a room that you already have.

Personal relaxation or lounge?

Consider these two options, personal relaxation versus an upstairs lounge. For personal relaxation you would make the room into somewhat of a mix of the living room and bedroom. You could have a single bed in the room, together with an armchair that looks out toward the window. This means that the room would be your little corner of the home where you can just relax, away from the kids, your partner and the pets. Here you could read a book in silence, have a snack or have a chat with your friends on the phone or via online without disturbing anyone else.

On the other hand the lounge option would mean hiring some furniture transport because you should put a great sofa in the room. The services are user-rated and reviewed, so you know who you can and can’t trust. They offer assistance in moving it also so you need not put your back out lifting it up the stairs. It could be a corner sofa that is end to end giving maximum space usage. The design is modern so it doesn’t look like a hovel trapped in time, the spare room could end up looking even more fashionable than your downstairs lounge.

For the pets

Still not sure about what to do? If you have pets, usually they will sleep downstairs in their own beds. They could be moved upstairs nearer to where the rest of the family sleeps. In fact, the spare room could become the pet room, where they could play with their toys and gnaw on bones without damaging the walls or floor in the kitchen. If you install a small bath, you could wash them here too and not need to put them into the same bath the family uses. All their clothes could be kept in this room, such as towels, winter jackets, costumes etc.

The empty room is always a conundrum in households that aren’t used to having a spare room no one uses. The fear is messing it up with decor and things that don’t work. However, it could be your little space or privacy, or perhaps a zone where the pets can be a little wilder inside the house!

How to Decorate your Home for Autumn

Autumn is just around the corner so now it is more important than ever to get the house in order. Autumn is a wonderful time and all of the leaves will soon turn nice and golden, before falling from the tree onto the cold and hard ground. It’s safe to say that autumn is one of the best times for you to spruce up the home but at the end of the day, so many people fail to do it every single year. So if you want to get your home ready for autumn then you can find out whatever you need to know right here.

Orange is Your Friend

When you think of autumn colors, what really sticks out is the various shades of orange. Consider using deep and dark accent colors. These rustic colors will really create a wonderful feeling of warmth and it will also give you a good level of comfort as well. You will even find that it makes your home feel much more inviting and this is a great way for you to get everything looking great.

Warmth

Autumn is the time for log fires and snuggling up on the sofa. This is a fantastic way for you to combat those wet, miserable Mondays. One of the best ways for you to make your home feel way warmer without having to decorate is to invest in a space heater. They are super practical and they are also very easy to carry around the home as well. you can even invest in a log burner as well. When you do have a log burner you can install it into your wall and nothing can quite compare to this.

Accessorize

Your autumn wardrobe is all about accessorising. You have to think about coats, scarves, gloves, hats and more. Your homes cosiness will be boosted with the right accessories and the best way for you to do this would be for you to add some soft textures. A lot of people are so against mismatching fabrics and even accessories that they really don’t open up the full potential of their home. Consider opting for things such as fleeces, heavy cottons or even knitted items as well. This will add layer after layer of cosy comfort and it can work wonders for the cosiness level of your home. You may even want to opt for a knitted ottoman as well, or even invest in a throw for your sofa. When you add a few cushions you will soon see how this can make all the difference and you will also see that you can add so much personality to your home as well.

It’s All About Layers

If you think that there is a rule of one rug per room then there are a few rules that you need to follow.  There is no such thing as too many rugs or even carpets. If you want you can overlap lots of rugs and you can even add a cosy Moroccan vibe as well. The main thing that you have to remember here is that you don’t want to trip over them when you walk into the room, so try and space them out appropriately and don’t put them right outside doorways.

Lighting

Another way to make your home cosier would be for you to add more lighting. A great way for you to capitalise on making your home look as cosy as possible would be for you to have some dot lamps around the room. You also need to try and grab an end table and even find a way to install a shelf or two as well. When you can do this you can easily install way more lighting and this is a fantastic way for you to make the most out of the light that you have in your home.

Never Ignore the Bathroom

The bathroom is easily one of the major rooms that you should focus on. It helps to have a rug that is right next to your bath and this will help to stop your feet from touching the cold, tiled floor. If you want to maximise the feel of the room then it also helps to have some scented candles as well. Vanity lamps are ideal and you can also have some floating shelves installed. When you do this, you can then really get more light into the room and you can also brighten it up as well. When you are choosing your scented candles, try and make sure that you are choosing ones that are nice and spicy. Toasty scents are also great because they can really make your home feel warm, so do keep that in mind when the time does come for you to get started.

The Windows

Sure, it’s cold outside but you really don’t want your windows to make your home feel cold as well. Invest in some vinyl windows or even try and have some nice flowers in the windows. This is a fantastic way for you to really make your home feel more cosy and you can even decorate to your heart’s content as well. When you look at your curtains, try and make sure that they are nice and thick and also make sure that they are able to lock in heat as well. Curtains that are able to do this often have more than one layer. So when the night gets late and there is frost outside, you can shut the curtains and feel instantly warmer. The best thing about this is that it can also save on your energy bills as well, and this is a fantastic way for you to really make the most out of the bills that you pay.

Of course, if you want to really make your home feel cosy then these top tips will help. You would be surprised at how easy it is for you to really turn things around and when you put the work in, you can seriously get your home ready for the colder months.

Fall Decorating Inspiration

Fall Decorating

We’re smack-dab in the middle of Fall and I have to say it is one of my favorite times of the year. The crisp weather, beautiful Fall color, pumpkins galore and of course yummy comfort food – how can you not love that?

Like most seasons, I decorate my home surroundings with elements that reflect what’s going on in nature. And well, because Mother Nature is the true ultimate decorator, it makes sense to take cues from her.

Here are some inspirational photos of my décor this year. Chuck full of Fall leaves and pumpkins. (and pumpkins and pumpkins….did I say pumpkins?)

House Fenway’s Favorite Autumn Pillows

One of my favorite décor addictions? Throw pillows. And why wouldn’t they be? Throw pillows are the easiest and most affordable way of changing the look of a room. Pillows can add a pop of needed color, combine interesting textures, develop layering, interest and even tie a complete room together. This fall, I’ve picked some of my favorite trending pillows. These aren’t pillows you’d generally expect for fall, but with this year’s autumnal color palate swaying toward cool blues and neutral grays, there are some surprising favorites. These picks will add a nice twist to your normal fall décor and help carry you right into Winter.

Pillows2

  1. Cinderella Pumpkin Pillow
  2. Gray Cable Sweater Knit Pillow
  3. “The Snuggle is Real” Pillow
  4. Gray Floral Pillow
  5. White Goat Fur Pillow
  6. Light Gray Burlap Textured Pillow

How do you style throw pillows?

Sofa

Here are a couple tips for styling a sofa:

  1. Always start from the outside of the sofa and work your way inward.
  2. Stack smaller pillows in front of larger ones to add layering
  3. Limit the amount of patterns to prevent your arrangement from looking too busy
  4. Mix and match textures, colors and patterns staying within a color palette to create a cohesive and pleasant grouping
  5. An odd number of pillows is usually more visual appealing.
  6. To add even more interest add an odd shaped pillow (i.e. a round or bolster pillow) in the center of the grouping.
