DIY Flower Maven Floral Design Workshop

You’re at the grocery store and you push your cart right past a bank of jaw-dropping, colorful blooms. They are just too pretty to pass up, so you grab three bunches wrapped in cellophane and place them into the child seat of your cart. You get home, unpack your flower haul, grab a vase, a packet of flower food and start snipping stems. After jamming them all in the vase you notice that you trimmed half of them too short, there is a big hole in the back of the arrangement and that one dang flower just won’t cooperate. Ugg. I’ve been there!

Flower arranging can be downright difficult and sometimes even overwhelming. So many questions! What kind of flowers should I buy? How many bunches? What kind of vessel should I use? Do I use flower food? It would be so much easier to just buy a finished arrangement, but who has the time or money for that?! Ummm, Not me!

Well, my “flower arranging luck” was about to change (is that kind of luck even a thing?). I connected with Stephanie, the owner of DIY Flower Maven, based out of Yorkville, WI. A new, one-woman business that specializes in teaching others simple and stress-free flower arranging. Whether you are a bride that wants to save a little cash and do your own flowers or a group of girlfriends that are in dire need for a quality “girls night in”, Stephanie’s flower workshops are the perfect fit!

Earlier this month, I had Stephanie from DIY Flower Maven come to House Fenway for one of her floral design workshops. I thought it would be a great way to spend a sunny Spring afternoon with some of my girlfriends. Stephanie came fully prepared for the class, with all of the flowers, vessels, tools, and buckets of patience (with us, this was needed. 😊 )

What to expect at a Floral Design Workshop

We began the workshop with a brief overview of the variety of flowers Stephanie brought with her and continued by setting up our workspace — prepping for the flower magic!

Flowers44.jpeg

Stephanie did a great job teaching us about what kind of vessel to choose, dependant on the flowers we are going to arrange, how to prep the container for the bouquet to keep its shape, and how to maintain the bouquet after the arrangement is complete.

Flowers32.jpeg

Starting with the greenery, we built the foundation for our gorgeous bouquets using two varieties of leaves.

Working on the focal point, we added some stunning Protea (super popular in the floral market right now), followed by a couple stems of Hydrangea and some intense Blue Thistle.

To add texture and help fill in space, we tucked in some spikey and naked, seeded eucalyptus. The smell was AMAZING!

Next, a punch of color and some elegance — sprigs of bright pink tea roses and some large cream roses.

Finishing off these beautiful bouquets, we added some dainty pink tulips, which not only added height but another punch of color.

Our Finished Arrangements

The finished floral arrangements turned out absolutely fabulous! We were all pleased with the outcome (and swooning over what we all created!). Stephanie at DIY Flower Maven did an amazing job teaching us the basics and assisting us all along the way. She was patient, personal, informative, and it’s reflected in the finished product.

re:Craft & Relic Show Sneak Peek

It shouldn’t be a surprise by now that I have a great love for the arts and supporting artists and their small businesses. In this new world of technology and conveniences I’ve noticed a great resurgence of art, craftsmanship and an over all appreciation for relics from the past. An amazing thing to celebrate and get excited about!

This “art and relic” resurgence is celebrated by a local Wisconsin show, re:Craft & Relic. The curated show is put on a three times a year and includes 150+ artists, junkers and makers who are selling their wares and treasures. This coming weekend (Nov 10 & 11, 2018), I have the privilege to hangout at the show, meet with local artists and shop for some wonderful treasures myself.

3 Wren Street

Business location: Racine, WI

Our family sells vintage and antiques as 3 Wren Street at flea markets, antique malls, vintage pop up events, and even out of our garage! We also sell online and have an Etsy shop.  Our booth spaces are a mix of everything we love – industrial pieces, primitive items, shabby chic finds, classic antiques, and more! We try to bring unique items to each show we sell at, but also bring the “staples” that our repeat customers expect to find. We are in the process of moving from Racine, WI to Door County, WI so we’ll be doing a lot more shows in that area starting next year. People can also find us on Facebook. We post pictures of new finds, links to items listed in our Etsy shop, and our upcoming shows on Facebook.
